All About Gardens And Gardening

Let us start with a basic definition. A garden is a plot of land where flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruits are cultivated. Gardening is nothing but cultivating the plants on a piece of land. Gardening can be both a hobby as and commercial activity. As a gardening enthusiasts I spend my days with plants and flowers and go back home singing.

The location of your garden plays an important role in your gardening success. The garden should enjoy ample sun and have easy access to water. Ideally, you also need to have fertile soil. But don’t fret, fven if all of these aren’t available, gardening can be done successfully.

Plants to be cultivated in a garden depend on the garden size. A small garden owner can consider beets, lettuce, onions, carrots, cabbage, etc. However plants like cucumber, okra, mustard, watermelon, etc need a larger garden size. Cultivating flowers is rather independent of garden size and can be done virtually anywhere.

In order to have a beautiful garden, one needs to have a proper garden layout in place. Some plants need more sun than others. Such crops should be planted towards northern or southern parts of the garden. Also, make sure other plants do not shade those requiring more sunlight.

Another important aspect of gardening is the set of tools required. A standard set of garden tools constitutes a spading fork, a hoe, a watering can, a shovel,a bow rake and a pair of gardening shears. And don’t forget the old clothes because you’re probably going to get dirty! You should select these tools by evaluating on these parameters – functionality, quality and price. For the most part you should get the best you can afford.

The four most important parameters of your success in gardening – soil, water, fertilization and your interest. And really, interest is the most important because if you’re not doing it for yourself you won’t enjoy doing it.

Organic Gardening

Think of the earlier days when chemical fertilizers and harmful pesticides were not invented and people used to grow cereals and pulses, fruits and vegetables, flowers and seedlings using fertilizers from natural waste products. They were dependant on home made pesticides instead of chemical pest removers. The produces looked better, tasted better and were absolutely harmless.

Well, people have come to appreciate today the practice the earlier generation accomplished so well and regenerate the system for their own benefit. In short, the method involves no inorganic substances to be used in planting, nutrition or growth of plants and trees. Fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and supplements are all obtained only from nature. When this technique is applied to gardening, it is called Organic Gardening that is gaining popularity pretty fast and the produces thus obtained are termed Organic Food.

Though Organic Food is also available at most supermarkets, people prefer to grow them on their own for the extra satisfaction that no adulteration has taken place and the produces are genuinely ‘home grown’.

The organic movement has gained momentum and has now become a national hobby that is as interesting as it is productive. However, pests are pests and they are merciless when attacking plants and herbs in an organic garden. But there are ways to get rid of them in a natural way. One simple method is to plant marigolds near the vegetable patch; another is to make a concoction of cooking oil, dish washing soap and water and spray the mixture to remove the pests.

Nor is the subject of natural fertilizers ignored. Merely using kitchen and garden waste materials that may contain potato and other vegetable peelings with a touch of rose prunings to improve the texture has solved the mysterious way of compost making. Coffee grounds add an agreeable smell to the blend. This also does away about disposing all that waste products. But make sure that everything is dry.

If you are interested to know how the organic garden lovers insulate and enrich the soil, I may till you now. It is a simple matter composed of pine needles and grass clippings gently spread over the ground right under the plant. Ingenious, isn’t it?

By the way, parents of young children are worried about the chemicals that usually find their way in our food production and sometimes these chemicals get into the waterways, causing unknown damages to the human system. However, organic gardens are free from such hazardous chemicals and your kids and the dog, already a family member, can play there safely since it is a natural chemical free zone.

People indulge in organic gardening not only to obtain the product but also for their own mental satisfaction. Any creative work, big or small, always has its reward. Lovers of organic gardening derive immense pleasure in planting, pruning, enriching and taking care of their garden. And this taking care also becomes a part of the entire family as others are encouraged to take active part in the organic garden. They learn that it is important to identify with nature to survive and flourish.

Gardening Facts

Gardening can be described as an art in which plants are grown for the purpose of creating an impressive landscape. Gardening can take place at a private home, or it can be used at public buildings. The space that is used for gardening is called the garden. While most gardens will typically be located on the ground, some have been built on top of roofs as well. A large garden is often referred to as being a park, and will often be a tourist attraction. In a large facility a number of workers will be responsible for the maintenance of the garden, and are called gardeners. Gardening falls under three primary categories, and these are outdoor gardening, indoor gardening, and water gardening.

As the name implies, indoor gardening is the art of creating gardens inside buildings and homes. Houseplants will often be used, and the garden may also be used as a natural heating or cooling unit. Water gardening is the art of growing plants near ponds or pools. The most basic water garden will be a small collection of water that will contain plants. While many people compare gardening to farming, there are a number of notable differences. Farming is designed to grow food that can be consumed by individuals, while gardening is done primarily for design purposes.

While food may be grown in a garden, it will generally only be consumed by the gardener and their close relatives. Farming is almost always done on a much large scale than gardening. While very few tools are required for gardening, extensive equipment must be used by those who want to create even moderate sized farms. Despite this, it should be noted that the lines between gardens and farms often become blurred. Despite the fact that most gardens are much smaller than farms, they tend to be much more productive.

The design of the garden is considered to be sacred in many cultures. While gardening is often considered to be the work of women, Samurai warriors in feudal Japan were expected to create elaborate gardens in a process called ikebana. Throughout history, architects have been used to design beautiful gardens, and this process continues today. There are a number of social roles that gardens have played in societies, and this is also the case in the United States. Gardening is not only a form of art, but it can be an important source of food. Many governments have now begin banning the importation of plants to different countries. While some say it is merely to stop the spread of bacteria, others feel that it destroys and important part of gardening.

Gardening is a practice which has existed since antiquity, and it is likely that it has been in existence in some form since humans first discovered agriculture. One of the most impressive historical gardens was the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and it was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. In addition to this, ancient Rome was famous for having a large number of beautiful gardens as well.

Greenhouse Gardening

Even a small greenhouse opens up new gardening horizons - from orchids to early vegetables. With equipment in ready supply it’s possible to create a complete controlled growing environment which will run on auto pilot.

One of the biggest advantages of a greenhouse is that it frees a gardener from dependence on the weather. Inside the hothouse, under cover of glass (or plastic) you can grow plants which would suffer badly from the rain, wind and cold if grown outside.

Greenhouses can be heated or unheated. An unheated greenhouse offers no protection against frost, but it will provide your plants with more warmth during the growing season. The extra heat trapped by the greenhouse speeds up the ripening period and produces better flowers from decorative plants. Unheated greenhouses also offer protection against the elements - wind and rain - and shield your crops from attack by birds, pests and animals.

A major advantage of greenhouses is that they extend the growing season. Plants can start growing early in spring, and either be kept in the greenhouse or later transferred to the garden. In the greenhouse they will continue growing well into fall.

This lengthened growing season is achieved by the heat of the sun being trapped by the glass or plastic covering during spring, and, in the fall, warmth accumulated in the soil and brickwork during the hot season is released back into the greenhouse.

A typical use of unheated greenhouses is to grow tomatoes during spring and summer, and, in fall, when the tomatoes have been discarded, late flowering chrysanthemums can be cultivated to brighten the approach of winter. It’s also quite common nowadays for gardeners to grow grapes and melons in unheated greenhouses.

Unheated greenhouses are also suitable for a wide range of half-hardy shrubs, lilies, gladioli, annuals, and other bulbs which will produce the finest blooms.

Lettuces, radishes, French beans, carrots, potatoes, and all out-of-season vegetables which are normally grown in cloches or frames are equally suited to growing in unheated greenhouses.
